The Significance of Watsons Caring Theory to Nursing If you were to ask any nurse what they do during their time at work, probably each of them would have a slightly varied answer. These different answers would likely be based on what type of facility the nurse works in or what type of patients they provide care for; in addition, the answers would also take into account education and responsibilities of the individual nurse. With so much variance between what each nurse does it is no wonder that as a profession nursing has difficulty being recognized as an independent part of the health care team and is often viewed as an extension of other professions. In order for nursing to stand as an independent profession among all other scientific professions there must be an accepted body of knowledge that nursing practice is based on. In addition, this body of knowledge needs to be enhanced through scholarship and research with theories that explain the principles of the profession (Karnick, 2013). SIGNIFICANCE OF WATSONS CARING THEORY 2 of nursing theory, an in-depth summary of Watson’s Caring Theory, and how a nurse practitioner can apply this theory to their practice. Importance of Nursing Theory Due to the ever changing world of health care and the increasing complexities of patient health and nursing care the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2011) redefined the essentials of master’s education for nurses. The AACN’s master’s education essentials and guidelines state that the graduate nurse will be able to utilize advanced education, leadership skills, and practice technique combined with nursing theory to become leaders and partners in health care. This will allow better collaboration and consultation between the masters prepared nurse and other health care providers to administer, design, coordinate, and evaluate patient care and outcomes while working toward a healthy patient and community (AACN, 2011). After reading this one may ask why nursing theory is important and how does it work to help promote the profession of nursing? Nursing theory is part of the professions backbone and is used to provide rationale to nursing interventions, enhance nursings autonomy and independence from similar professions, and unify the profession as one larger area of practice.
