- What are your thoughts about the importance of self and identity on human development?
The focus on “self” as significant to human development originated with Freud’s (1939/1940) scientific analysis of the personality drawn on his concept of the ego. The ego is described as that component of the personality focused on “reasoning to make decisions” (Santrock, 2006, p. 42). The ego drives reality’s such as expectations, norms, etiquette and customs as determinants of behavior. The ego or self as it emerged in Western culture based on tenets of social psychology is based on theoretical conceptualizations of the self or individualism. Individualism reflects that shaping of a person that does not require others for his or her completion (Bush, Collins, Tamasese, & Waldegrave, 2005). For example, according to Bush et al. (2005), the concept of individualism assumed a cultural orientation focused on competiveness, status and distinction. This view has led to debates on the “self” as a unitary concept, or a self in relationship with others that cannot be separated” (p. 622).
