She received a course curriculum which outlined the courses necessary to complete her degree. One of the early courses in the program curriculum is NR-501 ±heoreTcal Basis for Advanced Nursing PracTce. You are a student colleague of Mary’s enrolled in the same class. On the class Q&A discussion board, Mary posted, “I took nursing theory classes ²³een years ago in my bachelor’s program. In regards to Mary’s statement, I would explain in my iniTal response I would emphasize when discussing nursing theory, there is a vast di´erence between the levels of theory in which an individual study in undergraduate verses graduate school. Iskandarani, Al Hammadi, and Al Gizani, suggest undergraduate nursing theories courses for undergraduate students might need to emphasize the basic understanding for all professions (2012). Nursing theory has created the context for which nursing pracTce and research were originated. I would provide her with research which will provide her with a raTonale regarding the importance of theory in the profession of nursing. Nursing theories were derived from Florence NighTngale, who contributed an abundance of knowledge to the profession of nursing. ±he context of NighTngale’s framework for nursing accentuated the eµcacy of pragmaTc knowledge. She alleged that knowledge established and uTlized by nurses should di´er from medical knowledge (McEwen and Wills, 2014, p. 26). In the profession of nursing, theories in nursing are the basis of nursing understanding, and de²ne the scienT²c framework of the nursing profession (Iskandarani, Al Hammadi, and Al Gizani, 2012). In providing evidence to support my stance on Mary’s statement regarding the need to take a graduate theory course I would state in my response that nursing theory is conTnuing to evolve due to the introducTon of evidence based pracTce into the profession of nursing. In addiTon, the ²eld of nursing has become task focused which has taken away from the nurses’ ability to holisTcally care for the paTent. As a result, addiTonal theories were expanded upon as the profession of nursing conTnued to evolve throughout the years.
