Diabetes Treatment: U-500 Insulin Diabetes is a growing problem in healthcare, and the use of concentrated insulin human regular (U-500) has been on the rise due to the increase in patients with severe insulin resistance diabetes (Monroe, 2012). Patients who require U-500 insulin use are those who have developed severe insulin resistance and require more than two hundred units of insulin a day (Monroe, 2012). Until July of 2016 there was not a standardized method for U-500 insulin to be administered, this has caused medication errors and patients being at an increased risk for harm or even death. It is a nurse’s responsibility to do no harm; however when there is not a safe practice for them to administer U-500 insulin this puts nurses and patients in unsafe situations. Research Performed Following a medication error at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center involving U-500 insulin it was recognized there was no standard process in place for dosing, preparation, or administration at the center. The error occurred after a nurse administered U-500 insulin in a U-100 insulin syringe, in which the patient received four hundred and fifty units of insulin instead of ninety units which was ordered, which was five times the amount of insulin ordered (Monroe, 2012).
