Nursing makes use of theories from other disciplines (a.k.a., borrowed theories). How does using borrowed theory support the development of nursing theory? Nursing is a multi dimensional discipline, which overlaps many other areas of science. Our first week of lessons taught about the first nursing theorist Florence Nightingale, who proposed a framework in which to practice nursing (Chamberlain, 2015). For almost a century the field of nursing was in the “silent knowledge” phase where nurses were obedient caregivers, with little attempts to develop theory or nursing specific research (McEwen & Wills, 2014 p. 28). Following the silent stage nursing, entered the “received knowledge” phase, were nurses learned by listening to others and theories were borrowed from other disciplines then applied to nursing practice. The discipline of nursing overlaps so many other fields of science like psychology, education, and sociology. By borrowing other theories, nursing can address patients in a holistic manner.
