Theory Synthesis Paper Instructions and Rubric
The purpose of the Theory Synthesis Paper is to link nursing practice, theory, and research by
utilizing material introduced throughout the course to:
● Synthesize your knowledge of theory by identifying a particular grand or middle range
theory from your textbooks that best fits with your nursing practice area of interest.
● Articulate components of the theory chosen.
● Critique the theory chosen using Fawcett’s evaluation criteria.
● Develop a researchable question.
You have spent time in this course developing a deeper understanding of how theory plays an
important part of the development of science in nursing. Therefore, the paper should be a
synthesis of what you have learned about theory, and applied to a nursing practice area of
interest (this can be the same topic as used for your Nursing Practice Paper), then the
development of a research question related to your topic. The paper should be no more than
10 pages, not including the title and reference pages. To achieve the purposes of this paper
you will need to:
● Introduce what will be discussed in the paper, set the stage for the reader.
● Discuss the nursing practice area of interest and why you selected it, how is the topic
important to nursing (this can be the same topic as used for your Nursing Practice
Paper).
● Select a grand or middle range theory (from your course textbooks) and discuss how it
relates to your area of interest. Summarize the components of the theory chosen (this
can be the same theory from the Week 5 forum).
● Critique the theory chosen using Fawcett’s evaluation criteria (this can be the theory
from the grand theory presentation or the Week 5 forum).
● Develop and discuss a research question related to your area of interest (propose a
researchable question that could be utilized if you were going to proceed with a
research project on the topic–i.e., PICOT).
● Come to a conclusion summarizing the areas discussed in the paper and including
nursing implications.
● Submit in ACE Assignments by due date.
** Throughout your scholarly paper be sure to utilize literature citations/references as evidence
to support your topic, theory, and critique of the theory. Corroborate statements that you
make in your paper by providing appropriate literature as supporting evidence (such as course
textbooks, journal articles, or research articles). Synthesize information from literature into
your own words (paraphrase) and keep direct quotes to a minimum. Some direct quotes may
be necessary. Be mindful of plagiarism and provide appropriate APA formatting including
citations/references.
