Age, ethnicity, gender, and family history are nonmodifiable factors that contribute to HTN (American Heart Association, 2017). High sodium diet, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, low potassium intake, stress, and smoking are modifiable factors that contribute to the development of HTN (AHA, 2017). Diagnosis is confirmed if the patient has elevated blood pressure readings at two separate visits with pressure assessed with the patient seated for more than 5 minutes, arm at heart level, and have not smoked or consumed caffeine within 30 minutes of assessment (Huether & McCance, 2012).
