Identify a Healthy People 2020 objective applicable to a population or aggregate to which you, your family member, or your assessment community belongs, such as adult Asian women, urban African-American adult men, or teenage athletes. In searching for objectives for young adult women, I came across a variety of pertinent objectives for the population. Specifically, I’m choosing to discuss objectives: C-18.2— Increase the proportion of women who were counseled by their providers about Pap tests; and HIV-17.1—Increase the proportion of sexually active unmarried females aged 15 to 44 years who use condoms (Healthy People 2020, 2013). I think these two go hand-in-hand when working to promote health for this population.
In 2008, 59.8 percent of females between the ages of 21 and 65 were counseled by their providers about Pap tests (Healthy People 2020, 2013). Healthy People 2020 set a goal of a 10 percent improvement, hoping to achieve a targeted percentage of 65.8. Data collected by the Health Indicators Warehouse (2008) demonstrated that persons of younger age, who are unmarried, disclosed a lower percentage of counseling than that of older, married adults. This is significant to me!!! With the STD epidemic is feels that we have in this country, wouldn’t education be sterner for these types of populations? On the contrary though, I do find the objectives made by Healthy People obtainable. In my opinion, these are subtle increases that really should be met. Health care providers should be knowledgeable of the importance of Pap test to screen for potential problems. It’s an important part of female health; and just like any preliminary screening, can detect potential problems early, leading to early diagnosis……
