Theoretically, adulthood often begins at 18 years of age, until death. Erikson, for example, organized life into eight stages that extend from birth to death (many developmental theories only cover childhood). Since adulthood covers a span of many years, Erikson divided the stages of adulthood into the experiences of young adults (18 to 35), middle aged adults (35 to 55 or 65) and older adults (55 or 65 to Death). Even though the actual ages might vary somewhat from one stage to another, the ages per stage of adulthood seem to be appropriate for the bulk of people (http://www.learningplaceonline.com/stages/organize/Erikson.htm). So, like in childhood, where some children may be delayed in development, likewise adults might vary as well, but the vast majority fit into these stages, including most 18 year olds fitting well into the stage of young adulthood as proposed by Erikson.
