In our daily practice as a nurse, we encounter remarkable moments of satisfaction, say, when everything seemed to have worked perfectly well despite a busy shift. Please raise your hand if anyone here has been thanked by a patient or a family member for doing the ‘best’ they can and making sure the patient has been made comfortable in his/her stay in the hospital? How about those who have been appreciated by a colleague for their support? And how about those who have been provided by empowering feedback from their managers? For sure, all of those memories felt very rewarding. These worthwhile experiences are called person-centred care moments (McCormack, Dewing & Mccance 2011). Person-centred care highlights the importance of individuality, i.e. care delivery based on individualised needs, and the advocacy for a person’s development. This concept enables the recognition of clinical expertise in practice, welcomes the dynamic collaboration between teams and the promotion of a culture of learning (Manley, McCormack & Wilson 2013). The person-centred process is the common ground of the methodological approach that advances the innovation in healthcare settings we call practice development (Dewing, McCormack & Titchen 2014).
Indeed, we acknowledge that the nursing practice in itself can often be challenging and sometimes ‘intense’. Hence we ask ourselves: How can we make those fulfilling moments continuous, if not permanent? In today’s seminar, we will seek answers to this question by exploring the processes paramount to the facilitation of effective practice development in the workplace.
Our theme for today is entitled the Kaleidoscope of Practice Development. Much like a kaleidoscope that generates a repeating pattern whenever the mirrors fall into various alignment, clinicians can transform these distinct moments into a collective person-centred care culture (expressed pattern) however they apply these processes or approaches (reflective mirrors) in their respective organisations.
May you all enjoy the seminar!

ABSTRACT 1 CRITICAL SOCIAL SCIENCE: FOUNDATION OF PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT
Jayson Catiwa
Practice development promotes an avenue for transforming the nursing culture through the enhancement of patient-centred care. To enable the development of effective practice, a reflexive understanding of the system from which individuals and groups operate should be understood to stimulate course of actions that would open opportunities for improvement (Manley, McCormack & Wilson 2013).
