Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that can affect both males and females. Gonorrhoea can affect the genital tract, rectum, eyes, throat, or joints. Since the genital tract is most commonly infected, that is what will be the focus of the following description.
Cause (Mayo Clinic, 2012; CDC, 2013):
-Infection by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. A person is infected
with the bacteria during sexual contact with someone who already has
gonorrhea.
Mechanism of Disease (CDC, 2013; Todar, 2012):
-N. gonorrhoeae grow the best in warm, moist environments such as the reproductive tract.
-N. gonorrhoeae attaches to the epithelial cells of the genital tract by
using pili. They then replicate, increasing the numbers of bacteria
present.
-The bacteria produce an endotoxin which can cause damage to the
tissues, increase the immune response, and is likely responsible for
many of the symptoms associated with the infection.
Signs and symptoms (Mayo Clinic, 2012):
-In some cases, gonorrhea causes no symptoms and a person may not know they are infected.
-Men: pain with urination, pus-like discharge from the penis, pain or swelling in one testicle
-Women: pain with urination, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between periods, abdominal and/or pelvic pain
