Personally, I work in a Nursing and Rehabilitation center with 200 beds. The facility specializes in sub-acute and long-term care. There are about 150 employees serving in different departments. Also the facility has occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy units to enhance patient’s recovery process.

Obviously, from a macro-perspective, it would be challenging to realize progress in patient care or productivity without effective leadership.

As a nurse leader, one must continually seek knowledge and skills necessary to achieve both quality care and productivity.  Their duties include organizing, planning and overseeing staff. The nurse leader interprets and implements organizational procedures and policies maintaining healthcare regulations and standards. They also examine patient care and ensures their satisfaction. A nursing leader skills also encompasses budgeting and delegating responsibilities.

Some of the barriers that impedes the work of a nurse leader is rising healthcare expenditures such as Medicare’s Payment system.  While government reforms aim at reducing wastage, they inadvertently lead to lower-quality care: caregivers may be compelled to compromise on quality in an attempt to cut on costs and increase patient loads.

Nursing productivity initiative should consider patients’ needs, availability of resources, nursing competencies and services offered. Nursing workload is a reflection of these variables and impacts the patient safety, delivery of care, and satisfaction of the healthcare stakeholders. Numerous studies have found a connection between patients’ outcomes and nursing staff indicators.
