Teamwork and collaboration are essential components to a successful outcome in the healthcare setting. This includes continuous communication and re-evaluation, as well as shared responsibility and common goals with both patients and the health care team (Hood, 2014). For the professional nurse, this is of great importance in order to encourage advantageous connections between patients and healthcare teams by striving towards mutual missions found through respectful and professional relationships.
Communication in collaborative relationships
In order to have an effective outcome that strives for total wellbeing, it is necessary for a nurse and patient to engage in a collaborative relationship. Four principals of communication will encourage the patient to be completely forth coming in all necessary information (Hood, 2014). The first principal is presence. Simply being there acknowledges that the patient is being heard, and according to Hood, (2014, p. 85) can result “in a deep, personal connection for both participants”. Empathy, is defined as being conscious and accepting of a patient’s distinctiveness so a nurse can “act as intended” (Hood, 2014 p. 87). The third principal, respect, is “the nonpossessive caring for and affirmation of another’s personhood as a separate individual” (Hood, 2014, p. 87). Genuineness, or being authentic to one’s situation, is the final principal of communication.
“Every person involved in a communication process affects and is affected by every other person involved” (Hood, 2014, p. 92). In the interest of carrying out the interventions to accomplish the targeted outcome, nurses and other health care providers must engage in principals of communication as well.
