What is the difference between a conditioned and unconditioned response?

A conditioned response (CR) is one that is caused by a conditioned stimulus (CS), whereas an unconditioned response (UR) is caused by an unconditioned stimulus (US). According to Pavlov and Classical Conditioning, a US (e.g. red meat) will lead to the UR (e.g. salivation), which is an innate, natural reaction to red meat. When a CS (e.g. tone) is presented before the US (e.g. red meat) repeatedly and contiguously, after a while the CS alone will lead to the CR (e.g. salivation) (Terry, 2009).
