Systemic Assessment of a ChiLd and a Family

Precious Jones is the main character in the move and is a 16-year-old African American female who lives with her mother, Mary in Harlem, New York. Her father does not live in the home but does visit occasionally. She is pregnant with her second child who was conceived by her father. The first was born child was also conceived by her father and was born with downs syndrome.

The child, Mongo lives with her grandmother. Precious has been subjected to sexual,physical, verbal, and emotional abuse by her mother, Mary and her father, Carl. Precious is behind in school and only has a second grade reading level.

She has been forced to attend analternative school due to the fact that she is pregnant with her second child. Precious and herfamily have been required to attend therapy in order to continue to receive their public assistancebenefits. Systemic Assessment and Diagnosis

The systemic perspective would require that a therapist evaluate the whole family and other environmental factors or systems to be able to assess them or reach a diagnosis. Counseling from the systemic perspective is a process that is dynamic between people who are considered the experts on their own life and problems rather than the therapist being the expert (Thomas & Karen, 2006).

Th therapist must work with the family to determine what role each member plays in the larger systemic picture. Each family may contribute to the diagnosis. The family must recognize the role they play in the success of therapy and how they are necessary in helping the family as a whole system be able to reach their goals. Therapy is a joint effort from the systemic perspective.

All family members have something to contribute to the process, as they are the experts on their own family. The family must work collaboratively to be able to come up with their own solutions through the course of therapy.

The primary goal of the therapy is to help improve the family relationships especially the relationship between Precious and Mary as they live in the same household.
