Thousands of Americans lost their savings, jobs, homes and everything they held dear. Some even committed suicide. The Great Depression was not just economic – it became psychological too, as Americans lost confidence in the present and the future. One historian claimed that tears flowed like rivers in many homes because a great sickness had gripped America and the world. The Great Depression became a major turning point in American history. As Paul Johnson asserts, “Far from trusting to the traditional American ability to fend for oneself, the children of the slump turned trustingly, almost despairingly, to the state, to Big Government, to save, nourish and protect them. This was a sea-change, and FDR, the embodiment of smiling state geniality, was its beneficiary.” (A History of the American People). Americans’ traditional assumptions about the role of government were challenged by the depression. During this era, academics and intellectuals veered sharply to the left and became hostile to the structural ideas of the free market, capitalism, individualism, enterprise, independence and personal responsibility. As a result, more and more Americans began to embrace or even demand a bigger role for government . Ironically, the social engineering and economic meddling of the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations likely prolonged the depression, instead of speedily ending it. The Great Depression then, certainly an era that produced enormous suffering, was not only a material event, but a psychological and emotional one as well. It changed America forever.
