We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Words written by some of the most influential men of the time that African Americans today are still fighting to achieve just that; Equal opportunities and equal treatment. One of the only races brought to this country against their will; theirs is a legacy of survival and overcoming sometimes impossible circumstances. There have been many advancement made in the plait for equality by African Americans in this country throughout history. My goal in writing this paper is to give a broadened view of African American’s history by exploring the abolishment of slavery, segregation, the New Negro Movement, Integration and the Civil Rights Movement, Affirmative Action and the African American presidential candidates of the past and present. Though discrimination and hatred still exists towards African American’s major milestones have helped to advance the goal of fair and equal treatment.
