You may root for your favorite football team or star on Dancing With the Stars, and therefore be biased in their favor when the referee or judge makes a call that affects their scores.
Biases or prejudices are preconceived opinions, attitudes, and sometimes feelings that are formed by a person through his own experiences with culture, religion, or envoirnment. These feelings, opinons and attitudes are often formed either for or against ethnic, racial, social or religious groups. You may think of all Muslims as violent, or all Asian people as smart. While one is a positive way to see a group and another negative, both would be considered biases.
Cultural bias is judging another’s culture in comparison to your own, often because of unfamiliarity or stereotyping of other cultures. Often times there is an acceptable standard of behavior and anyone who does not submit to those standards due to education, social status, and other opportunities is looked down upon.
Religious bias concerns treating people differently due to what they believe or do not believe. Religious bias and persecution has existed for centuries. Believing that your view is right and all the others wrong is a sure path to biased beliefs and actions.
Many times when you think of racial bias, you think of the stereotype of minority groups. However, racial bias comes in all forms. People may even be biased against those whose skin tone is not the same as theirs. The color of one’s flesh does not make them a better or worse person. It is what is inside the person that counts.
Gender bias is discrimination, which for the most part in the past affected females. Today gender bias also affects those who are transgender, transsexual, transvestites, gender fluid, and cross dressers. Because of individuals like Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner being in the public eye, transgender is starting to coming into the mainstream. Many people, however still feel those who do not accept their birth gender are mentally ill.
Where you get into trouble with bias is when you are not aware of them. Other issues arise when they are applied inappropriately. This may lead to making rash decisions or being discriminatory. A prime example would be not purchasing a German car due to World War II. Another example of bias would be not wanting to talk to someone because his looks scare you. Keeping biases at bay requires a subtle balance of self-awareness and your own values.
As a health care provider, you must be careful not to judge coworkers and patients. You must realize a skull cap and a wig has religious significance to a Jewish person. That a headscarf, burka, and hijab are religious items for a Muslim and also may be cultural. Treating those with different religions with respect and dignity is a must in the health care industry. This respect may also be to offer to take a shift for a coworker on their religious holiday if it differs from yours.
Health care providers need to put any bias aside and do their jobs in the most professional manner possible. What happens if a coworker or patient is biased? I am not going to lie to you: It hurts. How you handle the situation will make or break you. And get this, how you professionally handle yourself and not ‘take the bait’ just may give the biased coworker or patient something positive to think about.
