Assessment 2 is an essay based on a hypothetical clinical placement in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS), and the information and professional development activities required to provide culturally safe nursing care to the local Indigenous community.
Prior to a clinical placement in an ACCHS it is important to undertake some research about the organisation and the population it delivers healthcare to. It is also important to identify the ways in which nurses can develop professional skills in providing culturally safe care, both prior to beginning a placement and during a placement.
The information relevant to this essay can be found through desk-top research, in other words the information is readily available on the internet. You should not contact the health service directly for information. Please ensure you correctly reference the sources of information you use to support your discussion.
Body of the Essay – Parts A, B & C
Part A: Population Profile 5 marks (of a total of 40)
In this section you are required to provide a brief population profile of the area in which the health service is located.
This profile should include:
- The name and location of the health service – town/suburb/city and state
- The Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) REMOTENESS AREA Classification .

- Identification of the local Traditional Custodians using an appropriate reference.
A. Population statistics – how many Indigenous people live in the area and what proportion of the total population is the Indigenous population.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics produces are range of population datasets based on different criteria. For this assignment please use the following datasets Broome – population of Local Government Area (LGA)
Darwin – population of Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA)
Townsville – population of LGA
Mooroopna/Shepparton – population of Shepparton LGA
Adelaide – population of GCCSA
Ensure you provide full details of the statistics you quote ie the year and dataset they belong to, and ensure you provide an accurate reference for where you got the information from. If the Health Service is located in a suburb of a larger town or city keep in mind that service delivery is not restricted just to the Indigenous people living in that suburb.
- A descriptive general overview (not a list) of the range of other health services available to the Indigenous people living in the area (2marks). This may include, but not limited to, hospitals, General Practitioners, mental health services, and allied health services.
Part B: The Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service .
In this section you are required to discuss the concept of self-determination, provide an overview of the ACCHS allocated to you and choose one program to discuss in detail
- Briefly discuss the importance of self-determination to Indigenous Australians using Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services as an example.
- Provide an overview of the ACCHS allocated to you including;
A. The underlying principles that guide how the organisation delivers its services

• Core values
• Objectives
• Strategic directions and goals
B. A brief summary of the range of services and programs provided for the local community
- Choose one program provided by the service and discuss in detail how it contributes to the health and wellbeing of the local Indigenous community (3 marks). You are required to integrate evidence from the literature to support your discussion.
Part C: Professional development .
In this section you are required to discuss the importance of on-going professional development for delivering culturally safe nursing care, and detail three (3) examples of how cultural safety skills can be developed.
- Discuss the importance of nurses undertaking professional development activities to increase their cultural safety skills in delivering appropriate care to Indigenous people, and explain why it is important to be aware of information relevant to the specific local Indigenous community you are working with.
- Identify and discuss three (3) ways that nurses can contribute to their own professional development in delivering culturally safe care to Indigenous peoples. You are required to integrate evidence from the literature to support your ideas.
Please note, three specific examples of professional development activities are required, not three ways nurses can deliver culturally safe care.
