In fact depression increases the risk associated with attempting suicide, evidence showing that 90% of completed suicides are resultant of a combination of the attempt and substance abuse, in particular alcohol (Ferris et al. 2011). ‘Completed’ suicide refers to an “intentional self-inflicted act that has resulted in death” (Bouch & Marshall 2005). Although the prevalence of attempts is higher amongst females, males more commonly complete suicide by method of choice, such as hanging (Captain 2007). Unfortunately figures associated with suicide, self harm and depression are underrepresented, as deaths aren’t often reported or don’t fulfil the requirements set for these categorisations. This report follows an interview of Steven, 42, who has been admitted to hospital the
previous night when his parents called an ambulance when he was found intoxicated by alcohol on the floor, with a noose around his neck. A detention order was carried out by the Emergency Department doctor (Suicide and Self Harm Crisis Interview 2012). The factors for suicides are ‘multifaceted’ and ‘psychosocial’ and adds to the difficulty for the screening of risk associated with suicide in the community; hence general practitioners play a crucial role in being aware of what to look for (Joubert, Petrakis & Cementon 2012; Whiteford 2008). Whilst there is no prescribed risk assessment tool used, an assessment of the risk from the CBIS Mental Health Assessment, provided by SA Health, was selected (Appendix A). In addition, a mental state examination was also sourced from here (Appendix B). This report use these assessment tools to identify major points concerning Steven’s mental wellbeing, prepare a care plan with expected outcomes and detail recommendations considered in Steven’s care.
