Florida’s Department of Corrections:
The good: This correctional facility seems to use the inmates to earn their keep. They are expected to work on farms, gardens, construct new facilities, perform repairs and support and maintain the operational functions of the facility. Inmates grow their some of their own food which helps with the costs of running the facility. The inmates also work for the counties and state agencies in agencies such as the Davison of Forestry. They also work in other county, city, and non-profit organizations. The work force of the correctional facility has saved the taxpayers more than $44.5 million dollars which is an increase of $2.5 from the previous fiscal year. The open dorms are clean and like an army barracks. The cell housing unit appears to be clean and modern and the compound looks to be well kept and groomed.
The Bad: The one bad aspect of this work force is that the inmates are allowed outside the facility. This could lead to escape and a possible threat to the outlining communities. Offenders are also serving an average of 86.4% of their sentences which should be increased. Do the crime, pay the time. One bad thing for the inmates is that not all facilities are air-conditioned. Only in areas where the heat becomes so unbearable (i.e. Lancaster CI and mental facilities) are the facilities air conditioned.
