I have chosen to review this particular article because of my interest in the study of grief counseling. Death is a part of the human experience and, across America, families experience the death of loved ones, sudden and unexpected, or expected and managed (as in the case of voluntary euthanasia). I have also witnessed the effects of death in a family on spouses, on children, among loved ones and within the community. If not managed, it can be devastating to survivors, hence the need for effective family counseling to help those who survive manage their grief and loss and be able to recover to live healthy lives. As such, I find this article apt.
Summary
In this particular article, we find the specialization from a professional practice viewpoint and experience, from a personal position of imminent psychologist Dr. Ellen Coffey, the matter of family counseling and interventions in relation to grief; in particular in the challenges facing families who are coping with the devastation of having a family member dealing with and/or having succumbed to terminal illness. Coffey shares that she has lived with this particular challenge, having lived through the terminal illness of her late husband, Ronald, whose suffering was ended via euthanasia. His death has affected her in ways that seeped into her practice, leading her to do particular research on interventions that help families manage and recover from such challenges.
