They are likely in awe of his wisdom and talents, and very appreciative that he is sharing some of his knowledge with them. David, however, is an active learner. He states that he is “unaccountable” in this learning process. He is not a part of it, and it makes him “tired and sick” to try to focus and absorb the information the way it is being presented. He describes his leaving the lecture as “rising and gliding out,” as if it was not a conscious choice as much as a natural movement that happened almost out of his control, like sleepwalking. It is important to note that where he found himself at peace was outside, admiring the very subject that he had just previously escaped. The difference being that he was absorbing the subject at hand, astronomy, in his own way. Had the classroom been outside, and made interactive, this student would have learned and enjoyed the class. It would have held meaning to him. It was difficult for him to have a subject he so much enjoyed and found peace in, turned into such a formal, facts-only lecture, with a room full of people …
