Managed Care Organizations include networks of providers, most of whom are physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, nurse, surgeons, radiologists, and other specialists. Managed care organizations also consist of benefits administrators and those who process claims to pay providers or their practices. As members of MCOs physicians are often pressured into making tough decisions about patient care. Benefits administrators may set limits or expect providers to deliver the most efficient and cost effective care possible. However, what is in the best interest of the patient is not always the most efficient or cost effective measures, depending on circumstances. Providers and benefits administrators alike are in the business of providing health care services. Yet, they are also in the business of generating revenues. Profitability is necessary for both functions of MCOs to continue providing services.
