According to the website, world-psi.org, union membership has dropped continuously over the past 30 years. As of 2007, data indicated only 12.1% of the workforce was represented by union members. Following this trend, the National Labor Relations Board has received fewer petitions requesting labor representation and thus, the number of elections across the composite industry index has declined as well. Because of this declining trend, it is estimated that an additional 250,000 to 300,000 new members must recruited each year into the union base for the unions to sustain their current operational numbers.
