Jean Piaget is deemed as one of the first psychologists whose work continues to be directly relevant to contemporary theories of moral development (Langford, P., 1997). Piaget’s observations of children and their application of rules helped him to determine that morality is also a developmental process (Langford, P., 1997). He also determined that younger children do not understand the concept of ‘stealing’ and ‘lying’ and he concluded that children begin in a ‘heteronomous’ stage of moral reasoning (Langford, P., 1997).
