The literature review is critical to the success of research work. It should provide a succinct summary of the background literature for your research topic. A good literature review should critically review the topic in a logical order and should be structured around the basic concepts rather than consist of a disjointed series of paragraphs, each referring to an individual paper. For this research project, the review should be limited to a minimum of 10 pages and a maximum of 15 pages long (for an individual student working on their own or each group of students). The review does not require an introduction or a summary. However, you will need to put the literature review into the context of your particular project. It will form one distinct chapter of your initial research report, and must conform to the Style Guide for Presentation of Final Year Research Reports.
Consider the following points when you are finalising your review:
1.A good literature review helps to place your research in perspective, helping define the extent of the problems, and pin-pointing the aims of your research.
2.Remember when you are reviewing established/published literature that you are learning from leaders in the field. Where differences of opinion emerge, you are expected to comment on these.
3.Often you will get new ideas and new starts on your research topic as you review the articles. Your
creativity should be stimulated when you read how someone else has attacked the problem.
4.You are made aware of what others have done and written about, and hopefully you can leap-frog
ahead of them.
5.Often significant research has been funded in particular areas and you can take advantage of other
people’s investment.
6.The literature review should not be a chronology of summaries of individual papers. You must draw
common features of papers together – synthesised, compared, and contrasted.
7.Demonstrate in the literature review how the research area has grown and developed, in complexity / understanding (from very simplistic to more realistic idealisations) and historically (how formulations have been challenged, inappropriate assumptions corrected, and wrong conclusions dismissed).
8.Demonstrate in the report the extent of your understanding of the research topic. Key words that
demonstrate increasing understanding go from the ability to list what is familiar to you, followed by describing, analysing, comparing and contrasting aspects that you have clearly understood, and finally, the synthesis of ideas that you have mastered.
