The Health Belief Model (HBM) was originally developed by social psychologists to understand why people failed to make use of the screening tests for early detection of disease. The model eventually expanded and applied to other health related problems including chronic illness such as patient’s response to symptoms or compliance with medical regimens (Stroebe and Stroebe, 1997).
