An important task of clinical science is to determine what treatments will be effective in helping a child with abuse problems such as substance abuse. Research is presented for the need and type of intensity of the treatment will depend of the level of involvement and/or the impairment caused by the substance abuse. In addition, the treatment plan should involve addressing the complex, personal and environmental needs of the adolescent, including any concurrent psychiatric illness, social skills and educational deficits, physical health and family problems (substance abuse comorbidity, Swadi, 2003). Several instruments have been developed and tested specifically for measuring abuse-related concurrent problems and have been tested with abused children. These interventions are designed to evaluate abuse problems frequently experienced by these children.
In addition, many general mental health measures have been used with diverse child populations successfully, and considered to be clinically valuable, including standardized assessment measures. Research suggests that standardized measures should be considered as part of any comprehensive clinical assessment process (Saunders, Berliner, Hanson, 2003). Examples of instruments that have been used successfully in child abuse cases (including substance abuse) that can be recommended (e, g, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PICT, Dunn & Dunn, 1997).
