Social psychology is a branch of psychology that looks into human thoughts, feelings and behaviors in relation to as well as in reference to the social nature of man as he or she works, behaves and interacts with others in a social setting. In other words, social psychologists study how we behavior in a social context. For social psychologists, human behavior is influenced by others and the social context where that behavior takes place. According to McLeod (2007), “Social psychologists therefore deal with the factors that lead us to behave in a given way in the presence of others, and look at the conditions under which certain behavior/actions and feelings occur. Social psychology is to do with the way these feelings, thoughts, beliefs, intentions and goals are constructed and how such psychological factors, in turn, influence our interactions with others.” In social psychology the following concepts are of interest – self-concept, social cognition, social influence, prejudice, discrimination, interpersonal processes, aggression, attitudes and stereotypes. Social psychology has great relevance in education, policymaking, social work, organizational psychology, social health as well as related elements in criminology and law enforcement, to name a few.
