One current event that is receiving attention in the literature is the increase risk for addiction among high school and college students. Research indicates that alcohol drinking is a serious problem among youth and college students (Burck, Laux, Ritchie, & Baker (2008). Statistics are revealed that show teen alcohol including binge drinking is an ongoing problem in the United States as more and more teenagers indulge in drinking habits that will lead to a lifetime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In 2002, the US Government reported that 2.8 million binge drinkers were between the ages of 13 and 18 (Treatment for teenage drinking).The data show that 11% of the children are 8th graders and 22% are high school seniors (Monitoring the future). Other studies are presented to show that the transition from high school to college is marked by significant increases in heavy alcohol use.

Other research supports the ongoing problem of addiction among adolescents in academia. Crosnoe (2006) describes academic factors and drinking behaviors as most problematic during the adolescent stage of the lifespan. Vaughn, Corbin, & Fromme (2009) draw a connection between these two behaviors as disrupting the basic functioning of individuals and schools. As he points out, the adolescent stage involves dramatic changes, behavioral expectations, opportunities, and consequences. According to Vaughn et al., the transition from high school to college is characterized by many stressing functions and activities, and alcohol plays an important role as a coping mechanism by many students in college life.
