Social Anxiety disorder (SAD), based on the criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR, 2000) is characterized by marked persistent fears of one or more social or performance situations in which a person is exposed to by others.
Epidemiology of Selected Disorder
Under DSM-III-R criteria, children with social fears could be given a diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder, over Anxious disorder, or Avoidant disorder of childhood. SAD has an early age onset, but can appear across a broad age range. If prevalence rates are conditioned, the epidemiological estimates for social fear increase. According to Beidel & Turner (2008), in special anxiety clinics, 15% of children seeking treatment for a primary diagnosis had Social Anxiety Disorder and another 3% had a primary diagnosis of Avoidant Disorder of childhood.
