TOBACCO ADDICTION The abuse of tobacco is an enormous global problem. Approximately 1.1 billion addicts globally and 5 million deaths per year. 50% deaths are in low income countries. 20% of men and 5% of women will die each year from tobacco abuse. 50-66% of abusers will die from related comorbidities. 50% of deaths occur in individuals between the ages of 35 and 69, arguably some of the most productive years of their lives. Comorbidities include emphysema, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other respiratory ailments. Tobacco abuse has been conclusively linked to cataracts, pneumonia and leukemia. Tobacco will turn your teeth brown and age the skin faster. Secondhand smoke will increase the risk of heart disease by 30% and cancer of the lungs 30%. Secondhand smoke is responsible for approximately 50,000 deaths from heart disease and another 3500 lung cancer deaths among non-smokers. 1/5 of pregnant teens smoke between the ages of 15 to 17 years. In a one pack per day pregnant smoker, the risk of the affected child to smoke doubles. Nicotine levels in the fetus are much higher than levels in the maternal bloodstream. Nicotine will concentrate in breast milk, amniotic fluid, and fetal blood. Affected infants have more problems with respiratory issues, preterm births, mortality and stillbirth. Children who inhale secondhand smoke are more likely to develop sudden infant death syndrome, problems, respiratory infections, and asthma. Over 700 people die per year from fires resulting from a dropped cigarette in the residence. Smoking usually begins in the teenage years.
