Overview
The article is based on rhetorical criticism named by one author (James Mulienberry, 1968) as one method to investigate Old Testament (OT) studies. In the article, Howard (1994) criticizes Muilenberry’s use of the term ‘rhetorical criticism’ to explain biblical events. He argues that OT studies have basically been a literary and stylistic exercise as writers use rhetorical criticism to explain matters of the Bible. Rhetorical criticism by way of definition can be explained as ‘ways to understand the nature of Hebrew Literary composition by exhibiting the structural portion of putting together a literature with various devices formulated and ordered into a unified whole’ (p. 880.). The process, according to Howard, is understood as rhetoric and the methodology is understood as rhetorical criticism.
To underscore his criticism of Mulienberry’s work as not rhetorical criticism, Howard (1994), first examines rhetorical criticism in OT studies and in other fields that concentrate on rhetoric.
