Factor Analysis
Factor analysis is a statistical method that is utilized for the purpose of describing and breaking down the variability in the observed and correlated variables in the study, particularly the lower numbered variables that are often unobserved and the factors. It does this by looking for joint variations in response to unobserved variables that are not directly observed but are inferred in the study. These variables are also known as latent variables. In this manner, factor analysis explains that the variations between 4 observed variables, for example, are merely reflections of the variations in the unobserved variables. In factor analysis, the observed variables are presented as linear combinations of potential factors, taking into account possible error terms. What the analysis yields is used to create datasets.
The response formats in factor analysis are component analysis and common factor analysis. Basically, they are forms of factor analysis and share mathematical characteristics (Velicer, Jackson, 1990).
