Scientific inquiry can be defined as “the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence derived from their work.” (NSTA, 2004). This can be compared to the scientific method in a lot of ways. The only difference is there is not a set process for it. In many cases scientists who are using scientific inquiry use it to follow a hunch and investigate it without really having a set of steps to follow, using their imagination to figure out different ways that something could be naturally occurring (Holistic Education Network, n.d.). Even though there is not a set way to preform scientific inquiry there is a road map that many follow. It begins with: Theorizing, imagining, reflecting, relating, experiencing, completing, applying, and finally analyzing (Holistic Education Network, n.d.). These steps are very flexible and not everyone chooses to follow them in order, which leads to collaboration and farther exploration. However, even though there is not a set of steps or rules to go by when using scientific inquiry, there is a purpose for it. The reason that we use scientific inquiry in places like classrooms and education, as well as in professional practices, is because it’s inventive and can touch on things that even scientific method cannot. There are more ideas about the natural world that can be explored on when there are no guidelines or set ways to do things. It’s for this reason that inquiry is being brought into so many aspects of daily life.
