Internal Consistency is a measure based on the correlations between different items on the same test. It measures whether several items that propose to measure the same construct produce similar scores. It defines the consistency of the results delivered in a test, ensuring that the various items measuring the different constructs produce consistent scores. For example an English test is divided into vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The internal consistency reliability test provides a measure that each of these particular aptitudes is measured correctly and reliably. This method is best used in situations where the test takers are able give the same answers to very similar questions. Depending on the complexity of tests the internal consistency reliability of results may not always be easy to determine.
Split-halves test is a test used for internal consistency reliability involves splitting a test into two halves. For example, questionnaire to measure extroversion could be divided into odd and even questions. The results from both halves are statistically analyzed and if there is a weak correlation between the two there is a reliability problem with the test. It works best on tests where the division of questions into two sets are random. The strengths of this method are that it is fast and simple. However outcomes depend on how the items are divided.
