The lungs do not have room to expand and continue to push against the lung. Sometimes a cancer may be responsible for the expansion between the two spaces. Other causes of pleural effusion may be tuberculosis and hemothorax or bleeding into the pleural space. Most of the conditions fluid in the pleural space are called pleurisy and are very painful to the patient. It is hard for them to take in a deep breath.
