Theory/Author Name and BackgroundDr. Nola Pender is a Mid-Range nursing theorist, who created the Health Promotion Model (HPM) in 1982. In 1964 she received her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and in 1965 she obtained a master of science in nursing (MSN) in Human Growth and Development. Dr. Pender received two Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Psychology and Education in 1969. She has held many titles such as registered nurse, instructor, professor, director, coordinator and associate dean. Currently, she is a Professor Emerita at the University of Michigan, School of Nursing and a Distinguish Professor at Loyola University Chicago (Pender, 2010).According to Dr. Pender’s curriculum vita (2010) she has written more than 50 scholarly articles, authored three editions of her book, Health Promotion in Nursing Practice. The third edition was translated into two languages, Japanese and Korean. She co-authored the last three editions of the book with several others. She has written chapters in various books and monographs, book and journal editor, and listed in several directories. Dr. Pender has been the principle investigator and/or program director of numerous Conduct of Research committees. Through her career she has done presentations at professional meetings concerning health promotion, as well as, many other topics. She has been a national and international consultant. (Pender, 2010).The HPM was created because as a nurse Dr. Pender saw that people were being medically treated after they had acquired health issues whether acute or chronic. Treating the illness became the biggest concern. Dr. Pender felt certain that people could significantly enhance their lives by avoiding illness before it happened. By encouraging a healthy way of life, health care cost would decrease. How individuals made choices concerning their healthcare behaviors became a focus for Dr. Pender. The original HPM was directed on common influences on health behaviors.
