Silence is appropriate when there is a need to understand what a client is trying to explain as his or her problem. For example, there may be periods of time in a therapeutic session in which the therapist continues to talk, or uses non-verbal language that indicates he or she is not listening to what the client is presenting as the problem. For instance, this can take place when the therapist counselor responds to the client’s problem by imposing his or her own views, beliefs, feelings, reactions and/or opinions without incorporating the value system of the client. The reason why this may occur is that the therapist has misinterpreted the problem, and it takes place with the therapist unintentionally adding interruptions to the client’s conversation. This in turn prevents an accurate understanding of the presenting problem.
