Have you given some thought to two aspects of your life that you have strong attitudes towards? It might be attitudes towards family, work, religious, and politics, to name a few.
As a case in point, let’s argue that you have strong ‘positive’ convictions about family ties and loyalties, even in the face of adversity. You believe that family should always stick together and help each other out, even if one person seems to have taken the wrong fork in the road; love and loyalty will conquer all.
As a ‘negative’ case in point, let’s use work examples that Bauer (2004) refers to as ‘challenged’ attitudes.
EXAMPLES: CHALLENGED ‘NEGATIVE’ ATTITUDE
The following are actual examples Bauer (2004) reports to have heard from people who suffer from challenged attitudes and distorted thinking styles. The negative attitudes are reflected in the words spoken. The first one, for example, “it’s not my job’ implies an attitude toward work that you will do only the work that is part of the job description, nothing more, nothing less. This attitude challenges the team approach to work that many organizations now promote, so it is considered ‘negative’ in this sense. Likewise, “But I have a college degree” blocks the collaborative team approach, as the worker is refusing to participate because of a negative attitude and perhaps distorted thinking that they are ‘better’ than the rest of the employees because of her or his educational status.
