Researchers suggest that in order to interact with other children a child must possess social competences such as: (a) being alert, (b) showing attention, (c) engaging in sustained activities, (d) maintaining focus on an activity, and (e) interacting with divided attention (e.g. engaging in a task while talking to another child (Molenaar & Raijmakers, 2000). A child’s development according to Piaget’s cognitive development theory theories go through four stages. Two processes underlie his theories: (1) the way children organize observations and experiences of the world, and (2) they way in which they adapt to the world. On this basis, children with disabilities or learning disorders (LD) must rely on the protection from state and federal laws.

One group of children with disabilities benefitting from these laws is the child who has developed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a behavioral disorder that affects children’s lives both socially and cognitively since they have difficulty understanding social rules. The child who is experiencing symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder that include inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR [APA], 2000).
