Jessica is a 25-year-old office worker who is obese. Jessica’s friends have been constantly…

Scenario:
Jessica is a 25-year-old office worker who is obese. Jessica’s friends have been constantly
telling her she should exercise for a few years. Consequently, Jessica joined her local gym a
year ago to make them stop harassing her. During her first consultation at the gym, a personal
trainer told Jessica she needs to run 5km on the treadmill every day. Jessica went to the gym
three times the following week and walked 1km on the treadmill next to people running
10kms, before cancelling her membership. After a few months, Jessica’s friends and family
started harassing her again. Jessica has now joined a different gym. You are a fitness
instructor working in the new gym that Jessica has now reluctantly joined. In your first
consultation with Jessica, she reveals she has been sedentary for the past seven years and has
never been a sporty person; except when she did dancing as a teenager.
Question:
Using self-determination theory as your guiding framework, briefly explain why Jessica’s
previous experiences have had a negative effect on her health and her motivation to be active
over the long term, and outline the strategies you could employ and/or recommendations you
would make, as Jessica’s fitness instructor, to ensure she begins and maintains a higher level
of exercise behaviour.
Notes:
? Provide specific examples throughout to demonstrate your understanding, and, where
possible, cite research evidence to support your claims.
? For each recommendation you must explain how the strategy would enhance Jessica’s
motivation (i.e., what are the theoretical mechanisms at work?).
