The abuse of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) involve addictive behaviors that have negative consequences, and often bring self-destruction to those who engage in the habit of consuming alcohol, or taking drugs. For instance, in terms of negative consequences alcohol and drug-abusers continue a self-defeating pattern of behavior despite the consequences. Substance abuse is determined as an acquired habit that is a combination of genetic social, pharmacological and behavioral factors. Biological components associated with substance disorders and addiction is contributed to self-stimulation that takes place in pleasure area of the brain (Punel, 2006). Substance abuse is termed as addictive behaviors of short-term pleasure at the expense of negative effect on health.
The implication for working with ethnically diverse client, who are addicted to drugs and.or alcohol is to understand the cultural context in which they live that may be a factor to their drinking and drug problems. For, instance in discussing substance abuse and/or drinking problems with a client with a background other than the counselor/practitioner, there is the need to consider factors including: (a) the client’s socio-cultural history, (b) education, and (c), cultural beliefs and values.
