From a passing thought to a false memory in 2 minutes: Confusing real and illusory events

The frequency with which subjects erroneously included a nonpresented word in their recall of a study list was explored in two experiments. The intrusion error was recalled by as many as 800A> of the subjects, and when it was perceived to have been presented early in the study list, it was assigned confidence ratings and phenomenological retrieval characteristics equivalent to those for presented words.

As a result, subjects were often unable to discriminate memories of real study words from their memories of a related but nonpresented word. Manipulations of encoding, but not of retrieval, conditions altered both the frequencies of illusory memories and their metamemorial characteristics. The results and paradigm are discussed in terms of their relevance to the “memory-recovery” debate.

In what ways can people distinguish between memories of real events and memories of imagined events? Researchers’ thoughts about this question have sometimes been theoretical (e.g., Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993; Johnson & Raye, 1981) and sometimes applied in focus (e.g., Lindsay & Read, 1994, 1995; Loftus, 1993), but their results have consistently highlighted the common difficulty humans experience when locating the sources of their memories-that is, whether they arise from one or another of two events, real or imagined. This paper presents a simple and compelling demonstration ofthe difficulty ofdistinguishing between memories ofreal and illusory events.

The demonstration is based upon classical work by Deese (I 959a, 1959b) and was described as an example of deja
vu experiences by Appleby (1987). This paper is not unique in recognizing the new relevance of Deese’s research:

Roediger and McDermott (1995) recently completed ex-periments inspired by the same earlier work. Indepen-
dently, they and I were impressed by the magnitude of the “illusory memory” effects observed and speculated that
the effects might be relevant to a current and controversial topic both within psychology and generally, namely, the
apparent recovery ofmemories of childhood sexual abuse (see Lindsay & Read, 1994, 1995; Loftus, 1993; Read &

Lindsay, 1994). The data provided in this paper speak particularly to the effect’s robustness, the memorial qualities assigned to real and illusory events, the conviction with which subjects accept illusory memories as real, and the
apparent source ofthis effect.
