When problems or issues are seen in a different way, substantial changes can be created. Looking for solutions can become productive and new alternatives can be drafted. That is paradigm. If this mentality is applied to the healthcare industry, then it is easier to comprehend how it has and continue to develop in a paradigm shift. It is said that the power of paradigm relies on the fact that “it explains, and then it guides” (Preventive Health-care guide.com, 2008, para. 12).
In this tough economy, it is essential to explore new and innovative ways of development and strategic planning. Not too long ago, sick people would go to the hospital to be seen either at the emergency room or the clinics. This created an overcrowding of the hospital physical facilities. A strategy known as outpatient strategy was created where the delivery of care is done outside of the hospital physical facilities (Mugford, 2007). Now, sick people can go to hospital ambulatory clinics or even acute care surgical centers. These allowed the hospital to grow into those previously used space by the clinics and to grow also on services that are provided at these ambulatory settings more efficiently and less costly than at the hospital setting.
Strategic planning in the 21st century involves recognizing that no one will know best where the changes can be done at a particular level than the knowledgeable worker involved in such task. A knowledgeable worker can define the task at hand, find the barriers or challenges that prevent further growth in productivity or identify strategies to facilitate such growth …
