Generalization can be categorized as either stimulus generalization–responding to stimuli that differ from those present at time of the intervention; or response generalization–responding in ways that were not specifically taught during intervention (Gable & Hendrekson, 2000). According to Gable & Hendrekson (2000), generalization processes must be planned from the start of any behavior plan in efforts to affect change in behavioral modification intervention. Shoneas and Osner (1989 as cited in Brady & Kotnik, 2011) presented a comprehensive model of generalization that included 12 strategies that support generalization as effective in a behavior modification program. The strategies are outlined in the following summary:
-Use normal consequences or reward that exist in the child’s environment
-teach strategies to purposely request the natural reinforced on the classroom and community
-eliminate behaviors that may be a road block to generalization of the new behavior
-reinforce any occurrence of generalization
