All dreams are about wish-fulfillment, according o Freud. Freud argues that dreams are secret agents into our unconscious. In fact, a person’s fears, desires and emotions that we are usually unaware of make themselves known through dreams. However, all dreams were fundamentally about wish-fulfillment. Even “negative” dreams (punishment dreams and other anxiety dreams) were seen as a form of wish-fulfillment; the wish being that certain events do not occur. Most often, such dreams are interpreted as a warning. However, even though a person’s dreams contain important messages that were important to pay attention to and not ignore, Freud believed all dreams were actually encoded – disguised. The notion here is that because the unconscious mind doesn’t speak any verbal language; therefore, it must communicate with the “dreamer?via symbols. Some of these symbols are considered near-universal themes, while other dreams are very personal to the person and her or his individual life experiences (Mendham, 2003; 2006).
