TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE FOR ASSESSMENT 2. for dummies CONTENT Assignment 2 is a professional community engagement report. All these points are NECESSARY parts of your report: 1. Explain why the community interests you in a professional capacity; 2. Explain why your chosen community is important, what they offer both the society and the individual; 3. Describe the challenges faced by your chosen community and how they arose, supported by evidence (community mapping); 4. Based on those challenges, assess what the community’s needs might be, and explain how you would prioritise those needs; 5. Describe the goals of that community and ways to achieve their needs. Articulate these goals based on your own understanding from your insider perspective, as well as conversations you might have had with community-peers; 6. Identify and explain what skills you might need (as a member of that community) to maximise the success of achieving your chosen community’s goals. Choose a community that is known to you, or one that is easily observable. Do not choose a business or franchise, as you will find it almost impossible to analyse their needs beside profit or monetary gain. Do NOT choose very large or scattered communities (such as the Indigenous People of Australia, or the Christian Community, or the Cross Fit community) as this will affect your capacity to analyse them properly. Instead, pick a smaller group (such as an Indigenous association that you know of, a local Church community, a local sporting club) that you can observe and come up with ideas for. STRUCTURE A professional report can be structured in many ways, provided it has a coherent and clear flow. A possible structure for your report could be: – Introduction: covers points 1 and 2. (Here you explain why your chosen community interests you in terms of the career you are pursuing. You then explain what positive impact your community has on individuals and society) – Community Mapping: covers point 3. (Here you use external sources to describe your community, focusing on its challenges. In this section, it would be good to have statistical data, charts, etc. to support your arguments) – Needs Assessment: covers point 4 (Here you explain what your community needs to overcome the challenges that you have outlined in the previous section) – Community Goals: covers point 5 (Here you explain what the goals of your community are in relation to its needs and its challenges. Use your insider’s perspective or external sources to underpin your claims) – Conclusion: covers point 6 (here you summarise the findings and recommendations of your report, and add a short reflection on what you need to learn to help maximise the capacity of your community to achieve its goals) There will not be any deduction for students using different report structures as long as they make sense and they cover all the points. WORD LIMIT 1500 words (±10%) (does not include references) Remember that Assignment 2 is a REPORT not an essay, which means that you can use a schematic language, bullet points, section titles, headlines, etc. to keep it within the word limit. REFERENCES Your report will need to have at least 6 references, of which at least 3 scholarly readings (chosen from the reading list or elsewhere. You need 3, three not 2 academic references. Think about sources you can identify on GoogleScholar for your specific kind of community, as well as definitions of types of communities you find in the set reading on needs assessment (see LG). The other references can be (but not limited to): statistical databases (ABS, etc.), newspaper articles, other professional reports, government papers. Harvard UWS style is the required referencing format for the unit. Your citations in the text (Author, 2016; ABS 2016; National Union of Scholars n.d) are included in the word count limit of 1500 but the reference list does not count. All photos, charts, multimedia material added to your report from elsewhere will need to be referenced. How to cite statistical database and government reports? Check page 11 of the Harvard UWS style.
