Poor lighting in the workplace is a common problem. Many people believe that lighting
is one of the most serious challenges they face at work. Of over 1,000 workers surveyed, nearly
half responded that eyestrain is the most serious hazard they face in the workplace (Herman
Miller, 2001). Eye strain is not the only symptom that can occur when workplace lighting is

provide as much natural light as possible, while avoiding heat gain or loss and glare, make
individual task lighting available and adjustable and light vertical surfaces, such as walls, to
increase perceived brightness. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) also uses and
recommends the use of ergonomic task lighting that is adjustable, for individual work spaces,
as a part of its overall world class work space program (2005).
